Ship Maintenance


Syllabus

• Planning of maintenance work: Requirements of classification societies. Annual and intermediate inspections, ship-class renewal, extraordinary surveys, boiler inspection and pressure vessels. Preparation for safe work in maintenance.

• Maintenance of marine engines: Component defects and repair methods.

• Diagnostics of errors. Maintenance and repair of cylinder liners, pistons, piston seals, crossheads, start valves, fuel injectors, high pressure fuel and oil pumps, thrust bearing. Testing engine components before and after maintenance / repair.

• Maintenance of auxiliary machinery and appliances: Auxiliary motors and devices, pumps and pipelines.

• Ship auxiliary boilers: furnace reparation. Water part maintenance. Mechanical and chemical treatment. Maintenance and setting of safety valves. Repair of boiler tubes. Maintenance work on the economizer.

• Ship hull and deck equipment: Check, test and repair of hatch covers. Double bottom. Openings to the main deck. Anchor and winches. Deck hydraulics. Cargo gear.

• Steering machine: Correct operation of the main and auxiliary device. Maintenance and repairs.

• IGS: Maintenance work. Classification rules.

• Electrochemical protection against corrosion: Anodic protection, cathode protection, classification requirements

• Protective coatings: Surface preparation, protective coatings. Protection of the underwater part of the ship. Protection of ballast tanks. Classification requirements for protection of ballast tanks. Protection of ship holds. Calculation of quantity of paint required and consumption.

• Classification requirements for maintaining the strength of the structure of the ship. Raw material. The total corrosion allowance is the corrosion rate per year.

• Setting Maintenance Work Quality Control.

• Anchor windlass, anchor chain, anchor chain stores, control and repair.

• Damage and control of main deck repairs: Steel ropes and ropes made of natural fibres - construction. Ropes of plastic fibres - construction. Maintenance of all types of rope. Classification requirements for ropes.

• Deck lifts: Register of lifts. Occasional checks and testing of lifts. Maintenance of lifts.

• Marine hatch covers: Structural diversity. Sealing of covers. Sealing rubber. Standoffs. Drain valves. Mechanical closures. Maintenance of traction chain. Examples of repairs.

• Seal cover seals tests: Chalk, water, ultra-sound.

• Maintenance work on the stern structure: Damage to the rudder. Maintenance work on the rudder.

• Ship screw: Types of damage. Repair of damage in Sections A, B and C. Temporary repairs to the ship's propellers. Use of synthetic resins for repairing ship bolts.

  • Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Management Plan, Garbage Management System, Anti-fouling systems, Ballast Water Management and their discharge criteria

  • Methods for carrying out safe emergency/temporary repairs
  • Use of various types of sealants and packings
  • Appropriate basic mechanical knowledge and skills
  • Maintenance and repair such as dismantling, adjustment and reassembling of machinery and equipment
    • Fastening
    • Deck machinery

STCW requirements:

  • Inspect, resolve defects and damages to weather decks, underwater areas, superstructures, cargo spaces, hatch covers and ballast tanks:
  • State the causes of corrosion in named spaces and how corrosion can be identified and prevented. Basic construction and operation principles of machinery systems, including deck machinery.
  • Lifting Appliances:  Testing, examination and certification before being put into use. Periodical tests and examinations.
  • Special proofs:  Protection against jack-knifing. Deflection of boom heads. Safety against overturning.
  • Tests and examinations:  Initial test. Regular tests and examination (annual, 5-years renewal)
  • Loose gear and interchangeable components:  Testing, examination and certification.
  • Ropes and rope accessories:  Wire ropes. Fibre ropes.
  • Wear, damage and repair:  Acceptable reduction of plate thickness. Acceptable cracks. Compression and tension bars, girders subject to bending. Components. Reduction of the SWL, repair.
  • Faults which may be found during a dry-dock inspection:  Rudder, propeller

Goals and competencies

Students must learn preventive, corrective and condition based maintenance work in the ship's engine room, boiler room and ship's hull to the extent that they can be performed under the supervision of an officer of the watch.

Implementation of the learning content among others include requirements in accordance with the provisions of the STCW Convention A-II / 1, A-II/2, A III/1 and the recommendations of the »Master and Chief Mate (Model course 7.01)«, »Officer in charge of a navigational watch (Model course 7.03)« and »Officer and charge of an engineering watch (Model course 7.04)« International Maritime Organization, London, 2014.
