Ships vibrations

Syllabus

  • Fundamentals of oscillation theory: sinusoidal oscillation, damped oscillation, natural frequencies and modeling of measurement data;
  • Oscillations in solids: a continuous image on examples of simple beams, with a shape similar to the ship hull in the framework of Euler-Bernoulli theory of beams;
  • Oscillation in solids: discrete image and finite element method on examples of simple and more complex forms of beams, with a shape similar to the ship hull in the framework of Euler-Bernoulli theory of beams;
  • Propeller as a source of vibration: derivation of basic principles for determining the forces on the propeller that cause vibrational states;
  • Propagation of underwater vibrations: derivation of basic principles of sound propagation in water and evaluation of intensity;
  • Analysis of ship vibrations: own oscillating modes of the ship's entire structure, hydrodynamic added mass, superstructure vibrations, ship engine vibrations (main and auxiliary), propeller vibrations, propeller cavitation vibrations;
More...

Goals and competencies

The purpose of the course is to give the basics of ship vibration mechanics. The aim of the course is to develop student for problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills, thus preparing him for understanding and solving problems in the field of ship vibration. Part of the exercises are performed on computers.
