Syllabus
STCW requirements:
- Basic construction and operation principles of machinery systems, including: automatic control systems
Basic configuration and operation principles of the following electrical, electronic and control equipment:
- flowchart for automatic and control systems
- functions, characteristics and features of control systems for machinery items, including main propulsion plant operation control and steam boiler automatic controls
- control systems: various automatic control methodologies and characteristics
- Proportional-lntegral-Derivative (PID) control characteristics and associated system devices for process control.
Function and performance tests of the following equipment and their configuration:
- monitoring systems
- automatic control devices
- protective devices
Function and machanism of automatic control for main engine.
Function and mechanism of automatic control for auxiliary machinery including but not limited to:
- generator distribution systems
- steam boilers
- oil purifier
- refrigeration system
- pumping and piping system
- steering gear system
- cargo-handling equipment and deck machinery
Marine electrotechnology, electronics, power electronics, automatic control engineering and safety devices.
Design features and system configurations of operational control equipment for electrical motors.
Design features and system configurations of automatic control equipment and safety devices for the following:
- main engine
- generator and distribution system
- steam boiler
Features of hydraulic and pneumatic control equipment
Practical knowledge
- Troubleshooting of electrical and electronic control equipment.
- Function test of electrical, electronic control equipment and safety devices
In addition to the minimum explicitly requested STCW content, the program includes:
- Basic regulation requirements: dynamic and static fault, control time.
- Basic components of the control line - control loops: measuring member, reference article, comparative article, regulator, actuator (executive) article.
- Regulatory devices, types of controls, regulator: mechanical regulators P, PI and PID with examples from maritime practice (steam boilers, fuel cleaning system, seawater cooling, steering of the ship's control); analogue and digital implementations of regulators; tuning of PID controllers (machine simulator: oscillating test of the seawater cooling system)
- Dynamics of linear systems: the properties of linear systems, the transfer function, the properties of the basic terms, the importance of the stability of the closed control circuit.
- Combination automatic machines: number systems and numeric codes, basic and standard logic functions, combined automata.
- VPNs: memory cells, digital counters, registers, data bus, memory.
- A simple microcomputer; basics of microprocessor programming, microcomputer connection with the outside world, communication links, A / D and D / A converters; displays; power supply.

Goals and competencies
The teaching material includes the principles of regulation and automation. Examples that illuminate these principles are from the field of mechanical engineering and mechatronics. The specific features of maritime use are emphasized.
