Syllabus
General information on metallic and non-metallic materials. Characteristic features, distribution, price, energy consumption for getting, trend in the future. Iron and non - ferrous metal extraction, basic processes. Pure metals and alloys: Crystal structure of metals, melt solidification, cooling curve, wall crystallization, elastic and plasma deformation of the crystal lattice.
Technical iron: The influence of carbon, the Fe-Fe3C diagram, the influence of the speed of cooling, grooves, gray castings, molten castings. Steel: Distribution and overview of the properties of steels. Special steels, alloy steel, carbide hardwood, stainless steel. Iron and steel compounds and their influence on mechanical properties. Heat treatment of steels: annealing, quenching, tempering, improving, cementing, nitriding, carbonating, local tempering. Processing of steel materials: casting, rolling, forging.
Non-ferrous metals and alloys: Properties of pure metals with additives for technical application (copper, magnesium, aluminum, nickel, zinc, lead, tin), heat treatment of non-ferrous metals, machining properties, standard forms of semi-finished products. Important alloys: bronze, brass, bearing metal, special alloys and their use.
Testing of metals: Strength, Hook's law for various metal materials, testing of static and dynamic strength. fatigue of material, creep of material, sustainable tests, notch effect. Determining the hardness of Brinell, Vickers and Rockwell, and Charpy impact strength. Technological tests with burglary and failure tests. Material composition tests and metallographic tests.
Non-metallic materials: An overview of non-metallic materials commonly found on ships: rubber, teflon, epoxy and other resins, ceramics, carbide materials, glass, cotton, non-metallic (plastic), composite, sintered materials and adhesives and gluing. An overview of the physical characteristics and possibilities of obtaining and the use of the use on board.
Corrosion: Physical chemical phenomena in various types of corrosion (chemical, electrochemical, high temperature, thermoelectric, pitting, cavitation, diffusion phenomena, ...). Seek against corrosion in seawater. Corrosion protection coatings (galvanic coatings, zinc coating, base paints, ceramic coatings, etc.)
Welding: Inspection of welding processes: forge, flame, alumothermic, soldering and covering resistor (disc, warts, point), induction, friction, ultrasonic, diffusion, explosion, arc (with bare electrode, coated electrode, inert gas, TIG, MIG , C02 MAG, EPP), under slag, electron beam, plasma, laser, etc.
• Details: Welding procedures used on the ship, including overtaking.
• Flame and plasma cutting of metals.
• Hard and soft soldering. Casting of metal bearings. Special procedures: Metalization and ceramic surfaces, hard coatings. Hard chrome.
• Temporary repairs and sealing equipment

Goals and competencies
The objective of the course is to introduce the basic characteristics of the materials from which the elements of the ship's isthems are produced and the basic technological procedures of welding and processing of steels that are located on the ship and are connected with the activity of the manufacture and maintenance of the vessels.

Implementation of the learning content among others include requirements in accordance with the provisions of the STCW Convention A-III / 1, A-III / 2 and the recommendations of the "Chief engineer officer and second engineer officer (Model course 7.02)" and "Officer and charge of an engineering watch (model course 7.04) "International Maritime Organization, London, 2014
