Ideal working processes. Effects on efficiency, comparison between them. Joule process of gas turbines and principles of operation and characteristics in marine applications, the importance of regeneration for recovery. Differences between the ideal and real working process of piston engines. Operation of two- and four-stroke engines. Foundations of diesel engine combustion. Classic and contemporary principles of injection and jet formation, common line, electronic control. Charging and extraction of two- and four-stroke engines. The essence of the cranial mechanism, force, strength, vibration. Fundamentals of the structure of engines, elements and materials. Heat load of various parts. Friction, lubrication, piston rings conditions, sliding bearing theory. Various oils needed on the ship, the effect of fuel on the oil. Sulfur in fuel. Exhaust emissions, measures to reduce, exhaustion. Turning field and characteristic, matching the needs of the consumer. Expected power of propulsion machinery for different ships. Driving resistors, interaction of the ship-propeller-engine, heavy and light propeller. Impact of propulsion type on engine choice: fixed screw, CPP screw, electric drive, azimuth drive, Voith-Schnei¬der assembly, Shottel assembly, jet drive. Cavitation problems.

Goals and competencies

Increase the general technical education of energy transformations in the thermal machinery, principles and operation of propulsion machinery on ships, types of propulsion, and the construction and operation of ship engines, since the shipmaster is often directly engineered by the engine and must at least functionally know them.

Special features:

Implementation of the learning content among others include requirements in accordance with the provisions of the STCW Convention A-II/2  and the recommendations of the »Master and Chief Mate (Model course 7.01)«, International Maritime Organization, London, 2014
