Cargo Handling


Syllabus

The behavior of the ship during loading, unloading and movement of cargo, ballast, fuel and water, determination of draft, trim and heel, flooding angle, static and dynamic stability of the ship, free surface effect, movement of bulk materials and  packed  cargoes,  general risks during transport and handling of cargo from door to door, obtaining information that is a prerequisite for proper handling, international guidliness related to cargo tranport, transportation of solid, liquid and liquefied cargoes, cargo handling technology, documents related to cargo and freight operations, protests, quality inspections, sampling, international rules on: stability of the ship, safe stowing and securing of cargo, transport of bulk cargoes, grain, timber, dangerous goods, ship prepardness for cargo operations: cleaning, stowage, cargo gear suitability, cargo plans for different cargo types, ship technical documentation (captain's documents), ship's manuals related to: cargo loading, lashing, ballast management, cargo securing, cargo quantity detection; correct use of international conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, CSC), international codes (IMDG, IMSBC, SSC, ISC, GC, BLU, TC ...) and other international and national rules and recommendations.

Goals and competencies

The main goal is to provide all general and specific tasks and procedures related to cargo, like cargo receiveng, loading, discharging, spatial and weight distribution on board  together with the impact on transverse and longitudinal stability. Students acquire the necessary knowledge in order to be able to acquire from all existing sources all information about cargo, procedures, international and national regulations, which enable the smooth operation of freight operations and transport. Students learn about the diversity of work and the existing transport, and especially the working technologies depending on the type of ship and type of cargo. Special emphasis will be placed on dangerous goods, where students acquire the ability to be able to find all the necessary data for the safe receiving, transportation and delivering of such cargoes. The calculation of the elements of transverse and longitudinal stability in accordance with international rules and the correct loading of the hull must be managed by the students operatively and intelligently.

Implementation of the learning content among others include requirements in accordance with the provisions of the STCW Convention A-II / 1, A-II/2  and the recommendations of the »Master and Chief Mate (Model course 7.01)« and »Officer in charge of a navigational watch (Model course 7.03)« International Maritime Organization, London, 2014
