Communication Equipment (GMDSS)


Development of communications, development of a search and rescue system at sea, SAR convention, SOLAS convention, GMDSS system, system structure, navigation areas, ITU rules, IMO rules, identification codes, broadcasting class, usable frequencies (call, work, priority, routine, duplex , simplex), way to  establishing connection and / or send alert through various system resources, working with VHF, MF, and HF stations alone or in combination with DSC, working with Inmarsat C and Fleet Station., security messages, NAVTEX, EGC, SART, EPIRB, other non-GMDSS communication systems , main and backup power systems, battery charging, power control, antennas and their maintenance, range, station registration, billing maritime telecommunications services, the use of IMO and ITU manuals and publications.

General Operator's Certificate for the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System


  • Principles and basic features of the maritime mobile service
  •  Principles and basic features of the maritime mobile-satellite service
  • Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
  •  Purpose and use of Digital Selective Calling (DSC) facilities
  •  General principles of Narrow-Band Direct Printing (NBDP)
  •  Knowledge and use of lnmarsat systems
  •  Knowledge and practical use of ship station equipment
  • Fault location and rectification on marine electronic equipment
  •  Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs)
  •  Search and Rescue Radar Transponder (SART)
  •  Maritime Safety Information (MSI) services 
  • Search and Rescue (SAR) operation
  • GMDSS terrestrial Distress, Urgency and Safety communication procedures
  • GMDSS satellite Distress, Urgency and Safety communication procedures
  • Protection of distress frequencies
  • Ability to use the English language, written and spoken, for the exchange of communication relevant to the safety of life at sea
  • Obligatory procedures and practices
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of general communication procedure

Goals and competencies

The objective of the course is to train students to work with modern communication devices on board. The most important is knowledge of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System at Sea (GMDSS), its devices and their use for emergency calls, urgency calls, security calls and routine calls. Using the simulator, the student will get a sense of working with real devices.


Special features:

Implementation of the learning content among others include requirements in accordance with the provisions of the STCW Convention, IMO Model course 1.25
