Terrestrial Navigation
Syllabus
Introduction. Aim. Historical overview. Terrestrial coordinates, nautical charts, navigation publications, plotting and position lines, navigation aids, compass corrections including Azimuths and Amplitudes, charts and chart work, logbooks and voyage planning. The computation of tides, and tidal currents. Maneuvering elements of the ship, STW, SOG, speed. Wind, current, distance, water depth measure. Terrestrial navigation techniques and methods: Dead Reckoning, Proximity Systems, Distance based Navigation, Distance difference based Navigation, Distance ratio based Navigation, Angle-of-arrival based Navigation, Signature based Navigation, Cooperative navigation in radio and sensor networks. Navigational infrastructure. Navigational Electronical devices. IALA. COLREGs. Great-circle navigation or orthodromic navigation, loxodromic navigation.

Goals and competencies
To get knowledge of expertise and responsibilities regarding basic requirements for conducting navigation. To understand basic concepts and elements of ship management from the perspective of different terrestrial methods. Students must be able to conduct terrestrial navigation in all conditions with the knowledge they have gained.

Implementation of the learning content among others include requirements in accordance with the provisions of the STCW Convention A-II / 1, A-II/2 and the recommendations of the »Master and Chief Mate (Model course 7.01)« and »Officer in charge of a navigational watch (Model course 7.03)« International Maritime Organization, London, 2014
