Marine Propulsion Engines (N)


Syllabus

Expected power of propulsion machinery for different ships. Driving resistors, interaction of the ship-propeller-engine, heavy and light propeller. Impact of propulsion type on engine choice: fixed screw, CPP screw, electric drive, azimuth drive, Voith-Schneider assembly, Shottel assembly, jet drive. Cavitation. Other effects on drive selection. Comparison between 2- and 4-stroke diesel engines, gas turbines and diesel-electric drives with different views. Construction versions of 2- and 4-stroke marine engines. Differences in characteristics. Subsystems of the ship's engine. Structural designs of the housing, crankshaft elements, cylinder assembly, head, head elements, injection system, lubrication, conditional valves, bearings, etc. Extra charge. Reduction and regulation of engine speed. Problems due to resonant phenomena. Effects of fuel quality on operating conditions. Emissions problems LM. Suitable oils for various purposes. The effect of fuel on oil. Sulfur in fuel. Development guidelines for marine engines, intelligent engine.

Engine monitoring, safety in ship engine room. Control of the main engine before, during and after maintenance work. preparation of the start, control of operation and correct state of the parameters of the engine and stopping. Maintenance of individual parts of the ship engine. Lifetime of the plant, economy with spare parts, maintenance planning.

The content is practically supported by simulator exercises and excursion to the shipyard.

Goals and competencies

The course applies the theoretical knowledge of thermodynamics and mechanics to the transformation of energy in thermal machines, especially pistons with internal combustion. It presents the theoretical foundations for understanding the content of ship propulsion engines from the program of construction, operation and control. The content also corresponds to the STCW convention.

Implementation of the learning content among others include requirements in accordance with the provisions of the STCW Convention A-III / 1, A-III / 2 and the recommendations of the "Chief engineer officer and second engineer officer (Model course 7.02)" and "Officer and charge of an engineering watch (model course 7.04) "International Maritime Organization, London, 2014
