Professional Practice for Mates (VS)


Syllabus

The content of the practice includes:

  • The student does an internship at the SV Slovenian Army (430th naval division - MOD) as part of compulsory summer military camps (115 hours of independent work). 

Content according to IMO Model course 7.01 and 7.03:

  • VOYAGE PLANNING AND NAVIGATION FOR ALL CONDITIONS
    • Logbooks and voyage records
  • POSITION DETERMINATION IN ALL CONDITIONS
    • Modern electronic navigational aids with specific knowledge of their operating principles, limitations, sources of error, detection of misrepresentation of information and methods of correction to obtain accurate position fixing
    • Knowledge of voyage data recorders (VDR) and bridge navigational watchkeeping alarm systems (BNWAS)
  • SYNOPTIC CHARTS AND WEATHER FORECASTING
    • Synoptic and prognostic charts and forecasts from any source
    • Weather forecasting
  • EMERGENCY TOWING ARRANGEMENTS AND TOWING PROCEDURES
    • Emergency towing arrangements and towing procedures
  • MANOEUVRING AND HANDLING A SHIP IN ALL CONDITIONS
    • Manoeuvring in shallow water including the reduction in under-keel clearance caused by squat, rolling and pitching
    • Types of anchor; choice of anchorage; anchoring with one or two anchors in limited anchorages and factors involved in determining the length of anchor cable to be used
    • Procedures for anchoring in deep water and in shallow water
    • Dragging anchor; clearing fouled anchors
    • Dry-docking, both with and without damage
    • Precautions in manoeuvring to launch rescue boats and survival craft in bad weather
    • Methods of taking on board survivors from rescue boats and survival craft
    • Importance of navigating at reduced speed to avoid damage caused due to own ship's bow and stern waves
  • ACTIONS TO LIMIT DAMAGE AND SALVE THE SHIP FOLLOWING A FIRE, EXPLOSION, COLLISION OR GROUNDING

PREPARATION OF CONTINGENCY PLANS FOR RESPONSE TO EMERGENCIES

Goals and competencies

Knowledge of maritime skills and expertise and responsibilities regarding basic safety requirements at sea.

At the end of the course, students must independently run the vessel in all conditions.

Implementation of the learning content in accordance with the STCW Convention A-II / 1, A-II / 2 and the "Master and Chief Mate (Model course 7.01)" and "Officer in charge of a navigational watch, (Model course 7.03)", IMO Model Course 1.24, International Maritime Organization, London, 2014.
