Measurements in Traffic

Syllabus

Basic elements for measurements:

Physical quantities, units, presentation of measurement results, measurement methods, purpose of measurements.

Physics principles for measurements of traffic parameters:

  • State of road surface (friction, whether).
  • Vehicle detection (counting, speed, classification).
  • Control of drivers (speed, alcohol, vehicle weight).
  • Environmental pollution (noise, gas exhaust).

Methods and devices for validations in traffic:

  • Validation of road surface state;

      Profile meters, measurements of road

      friction properties, measurement of light

      quantities, road-weather stations.

  • Traffic management; induction loops, radar,

      laser, magnetic imaging, video detection.

  • Environmental pollution;

      Traffic noise measurements, exhaust gas

      concentration measurements.

  • Sensors and devices for ITS systems and services.

   Selected intelligent transport systems (ITS):

  • Traffic control centers.
  • Electronic toll collection.
  • Incident management.

Public transport management.

Goals and competencies

The main aim of the course is to acquaint the students with fundamentals of measuring techniques, basics of physical method, devices and systems used in practice for; validation of characteristic properties of roads, data collection needed for traffic planning, increase of traffic throughputs and safety and decrease of negative influence of traffic to environment.
