Coastal and Near Coastal Engineering

Syllabus

  1. Introduction to maritime design of ports and waterways. Defining the correlation between the requirements of navigation safety and marine protection and the principles of design. Definition of maritime safety of the ship. Analysis of influential factors in the ship maneuvering system. Analysis of the impact of the geographical position, structure and technological features of port systems. Analysis of the oceanographic and meteorological characteristics of the port and the area of approximation. Analysis of the navigation features of the area of approximation and the structure of maritime transport. Organizational and technological support for maneuvering ships. Analysis of the impact of technical and technological characteristics of the ship and tractor on the maneuvering of the ship.
  2. Safety conditions and limitations for maneuvering by ship and at the time of berthing at the berth. Methods for determining the elements of the port and the waterways that are important for maritime design. Determination of the required depth and width of the waterway. Measures to upgrade the level of safety on the waterway. Determination of the allowed speed of approaching the ship. Choosing and defining the fender system.
  3. Measures to upgrade the safety level during the berthing of the ship at the berth site. Impacts of navigation and maritime security measures with regard to the economic aspect of designing or constructing ports and waterways. Optimizing maneuvering by ship and influencing the design of ports and waterways, primarily on the economic aspect of construction.
  4. "Dynamics of vessels"

• Determining the stopping distance of the ship according to the above criteria

• calculation of the required number of tugs for the safe assistance of maneuvering the flow under difficult conditions using empirical models

• calculation of the influence of low water under the keel on the maneuvering properties of the ship

• calculation of the impact of the added water mass on the speed of approaching the coast (at different angles), where all critical factors must be taken into account

• criteria for the safety of the ships for different types of ships (containers, tankers, bulk, passenger, chemicals, roro ...)

Goals and competencies

The aim ofthe course is to introduce students to the factors that influence the maritime aspect of planning and design of ports and waterways, in particular navigable routes for approaching the coast in restricted maritime areas.

Particular emphasis is placed on the definition of port and waterway paramteries that directly or indirectly affect the safety of maneuvering and during the time of the ship's shipment at the berth site. The design criteria are defined from the point of view of navigation safety and marine protection, and above all, the measures of navigation safety are defined. maritime transport.

The objective of the course is also the conquest of analytical methods for calculating project parameters. The subject provides a scientific basis for a detailed study of this field.
