Ship Hidromechanics

Syllabus

The dynamics of the ship is determined by the influence of the external forces and the physical characteristics of the shape of the ship. In the first part hydromechanics is considered more in a phenomenological way. Initially, we look at the hull forms and propulsion types. We continue with the theory of resistance of the vessel, where we look at the friction resistance and wave resistance. Latter we determine the resistance of vessels using two methods, i.e.: the use of models and the use of statistical methods.

In the second part we begin with an axiomatic treatment of fluid motion around the vessel. First, we focus on the potential flow, then introduce a boundary layer that determines the friction and finally treat the free surface as the boundary between the water and the air, which determines the wave resistance.

In the third part we look at the theory of thrust and propellers and specific procedure of the calculation of the required propeller for a given vessel with the help of known series of propellers.

Resistance:

  • Presentation of carcasses of vessels,
  • Different propulsions types,
  • The resistance of simple shapes,
  • Resistance due to friction and vortex,
  • Wave resistance,
  • Dimensional analysis,
  • Determination of resistance based on model tests,
  • Determination of resistance based on statistical models.

Fluid Mechanics:

  • Potential flow,
  • Navier-Stokes equation and the equation of the boundary layer of fluid flow,
  • Surface area between water and air, or the free surface.
  • Insights into calculation methods for calculating fluid flow around a vessel using known numerical models.

Propulsion:

  • The theory of thrust,
