Laboratory for Virtual Simulations of Ship Operations
The quality of education and training of students and future ship officers, in particular for the management level of responsibility aboard ships, inherently relies on the use of simulators: navigation simulator, engine room simulator, GMDSS communication simulator, liquid cargo handling simulator, dangerous and hazardous cargo handling simulator, VTS simulator, and SAR simulator. The main objective of the use of different situational components of these simulators is to enable the understanding and use of theoretical and abstract knowledge in practical scenarios. The simulators are used in the teaching and learning process from the first to the last years of study. However, in the third year, the final courses of Training on Nautical Simulators and of Training on Engine Simulators enable students to integrate and synthesise their knowledge and skills through complex simulator exercises of ship management, SAR at sea, and keeping a navigational or an engineering watch.
In the Adriatic region, the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport has always had a leading role in marine simulator education and training. In 2005, within the preparation activities for the annual IMLA conference, we were among the first maritime education and training institutions in the world to have integrated six different simulators into a single scenario. In addition, our simulators are integrated with real data, including:
- Data on maritime traffic of the Automatic Identification System provided by the Slovenian Maritime Administration.
- Data on maritime traffic of radar detection provided by the Slovenian Marine Police.
- Near real-time sea state data provided by the Marine Biology Station.
- Near real-time weather observation and forecast data provided by the Slovenian Environment Agency.
- Real-time data provided by weather stations placed by the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport within the area of the Port of Koper.
- Near real-time data provided by the satellite CleanSeaNet service of the European Maritime Safety Agency.
The integration of simulators provides the basis for maritime research studies and for the education and training in SAR operations of maritime administration employees. In the Covid-19 year, the researchers of the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport participated in the testing of our simulators in the ‘cloud’ setting, which further corroborated our achievements in the field of maritime research (see Riviera - News Content Hub - Coronavirus drives simulator training online (rivieramm.com)).

EQUIPMENT
The laboratory is located in three different rooms, and has a network of more than 60 working stations and five servers. Each working station is equipped with several operating systems. The HKOM network provides a safe connection with the VTS centre of the Slovenian Maritime Administration. At the laboratory, maritime traffic data (radar, AIS and CCTV), and weather and oceanographic data provided by the National Institute of Biology and the Marine Biology Station are collected and analysed. The system is also equipped with a maritime VHF/AIS communication system, thus providing redundancy to the existing VTS system of the Slovenian Maritime Administration. In addition, the simulator equipment may be able to provide support in emergency situations at sea, including SAR operations, and in modelling the space-time development of oil spills in the marine environment. Port planning, waterway planning, and ship construction planning equipment is also available. Moreover, the working stations provide the software for the mathematical modelling of systems, GIS application and IWRAP software. A detailed description of the available equipment is provided in the diagram at the bottom of this page.
PROJECTS
- Current projects in port planning and fairway planning for the Port of Koper, the Slovenian Maritime Administration, and the Port of Genoa.
